One of the questions that we are asked a lot here at Murray and Yeatman is: “Can Rum go off?”. If stored in a cool, dark place, unopened pure rum will be fine to drink for years. Once opened, however, the appearance and flavour profile change as the rum begins to react with the sunlight, warmth and oxygen in the air. Flavoured Rums and Rum Liqueurs may begin to spoil far earlier, as the additional ingredients aren’t as stable as pure rum.
To extend the life of your rum, keep it in a cool, dark place away from radiators and other sources of heat, and direct sunlight. Drinking rum that has gone out of date isn’t dangerous, but it may not taste as good as a freshly opened bottle!
If your rum isn’t tasting quite as good as you’d like it to, why not try our Double Dark or Coffee Rums? In our Double Dark Rum, we back add our organic Blackstrap molasses twice through the manufacturing process, making our rum even darker, richer and more flavourful – In our Coffee Rum we use real coffee to add wonderful flavours that all rum drinkers love to enjoy.
