Is Gin Vegan?
Gin is a spirit that is traditionally made by distilling a grain-based neutral alcohol with juniper berries and other botanicals to give it its signature flavour. The final product is then usually cut with water and bottled. But what about the other ingredients that are used in gin production – are they vegan?
It depends. Some gin producers use animal products in their filtration process, meaning that the final product is not vegan. However, there are an increasing number of vegan-friendly gins available on the market, so it’s definitely worth doing your research before you buy!
One thing to bear in mind is that, even if a particular gin is vegan, the tonic water that is often used to mix with it may not be. Many brands of tonic water use honey or other animal-derived ingredients in their products, so it’s always worth checking the label before you buy.
